Circa September 1986, I graduated from high school and quit my job at Roy Rogers Chicken. When my mother found out I had stopped, she asked me what I would do because I couldn’t live at home and do nothing. I told her I would take some time to “find myself.” She got upset and threatened to put me out on the porch to live. At that moment, I felt the pressure to move out.

One day, I was watching the show “Gomer Pyle USMC,” and it gave me the solution I was looking for. I went to the mall and spoke with a US Air Force recruiter; within a few weeks, I completed the enlistment process. I started basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in March 1987 and served honorably until April 1996.

It was a time filled with duty, honor, and shenanigans. Happy Veteran’s Day to all who served.
